Hilton Buenos Aires : Atlantico A & B, 3 hours
Tuesday 30 August 2016, 14:30 – 17:30
Organised by the FIP Academic Pharmacy Section and the FIP Health and Medicines Information Section
Introduction
Increasing antibiotic resistance and the projected problems with future antibiotic drug development are a growing global public health concern. In this session, evidence of the effectiveness of antimicrobial stewardship programmes to improve appropriate antibiotic use and reduce antibiotic resistance will be shared. Experts will provide guidance on educational strategies to develop professional expertise and steps to establish and lead an antibiotic stewardship programme in your practice setting. Application of antibiotic stewardship principles will be demonstrated through case study models in infectious diseases.
Pharmacists can collaborate with other health professionals in order to improve the management of these diseases.
Learning objectives
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the pharmacist’s role in preventing antimicrobial resistance, increasing quality associated with antibiotic stewardship, and leading implementation and adoption of antibiotic stewardship programmes
- Outline educational and professional development strategies designed to effectively prepare student pharmacists and practising pharmacists to establish, lead and assess the effectiveness of antibiotic stewardship initiatives
- Identify the efforts made by the World Health Organization and other agencies in order to improve the management of infectious diseases
