Wednesday 31 August 2016
09:00-14:00
Hilton Buenos Aires : Atlantico A & B, 5 hours

Organised by the FIP Hospital Pharmacy Section and the FIP Military and Emergency Pharmacy Section

Introduction

The World Health Organization defines an emerging disease as “one that has appeared in a population for the first time, or that may have existed previously but is rapidly increasing in incidence or geographic range”. Although the Ebola virus in West Africa is currently receiving significant attention globally, other emerging diseases including severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), viral haemorrhagic fevers, meningitis, yellow fever, plague, cholera, influenza and others are more common and are of equal concern to global health. The role of the pharmacist in preparing for and managing outbreaks of emerging diseases is a critical one. Best practices related to preparation for and the management of emerging diseases will be discussed in this session.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this knowledge-based session, participants will be able to:

  1. Define and classify emerging diseases that currently affect global health
  2. Describe best practices related to the role of the pharmacist in preparing for emerging diseases
  3. Outline human resource plans at local and regional levels, which can be activated in response to outbreaks of emerging diseases
  4. Describe best practices related to the role of the pharmacist as an active member of the health care team assigned to manage cases of emerging diseases.
