D12 Law and order in emergency pharmacy practice

Wednesday 31 August 2016
14:30-17:30
Hilton Buenos Aires : Atlantico A & B, 3 hours

Organised by the FIP Military and Emergency Pharmacy Section (MEPS)

Introduction

The practice of pharmacy in a military and emergency environment is unique. It is often done outside the confines of a “traditional” pharmacy, in situations that are less than ideal. Legislation and regulations define and control the practice of pharmacy, but they rarely address situations faced by the practice of pharmacy in a military and emergency environment. The needs of patients must still come first, while laws have to be followed. This session will present a pharmacist perspective on how legislation and regulations affect various military and emergency organisations.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this knowledge-based session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the place of legislation in managing emergency situations
  2. Identify the legislative and regulatory framework of various military and emergency organisations
  3. Describe the various challenges that military and emergency organisations are facing, when it comes to legislation and regulations
  4. Identify solutions to conflicting legislations and regulations that military and emergency organisations are facing
  5. Describe a process that can be used to best match personnel qualifications and tasks related to pharmacy services before, during and after an emergency situation.
