Introduction

Continuous treatment of cancer patients is one of the most important roles of pharmacists. In order to ensure the affordability of drugs to treat these patients, many novel drugs have been developed including molecular target drugs and drugs whose action is based on the immune system. For their proper use, pharmacists have to be aware of the pharmacological actions of these drugs through understanding how they have been developed. In addition, for the sustainable care of patients, collaboration between hospital pharmacists and other medical staff, but also with community pharmacists is essential. Pharmacists have to be familiar with palliative care based on the knowledge of proper use of analgesics, in the global care of patients. From the standpoint of best treatment of each patient, pharmacists have to carefully check pharmacological effects and the development of adverse reactions. Together with further analysis, pharmacists are able to provide the scientific basis for personalised medicine.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this application-based session, participants will be able to:

  1. Adopt the mechanism of action of novel anticancer drugs by understanding how they are developed
  2. Demonstrate the importance of collaboration of hospital pharmacists, medical staff and community pharmacists in the treatment of patients
  3. Conduct the proper use of analgesics in palliative care
  4. Determine how the clinical observation of pharmacological/toxicological effect is related to the provision of scientific basis for personalised medicine.
